[edit] Introduction

The Turkish Ski Federation is in charge of the development of skiing in Turkey and hosting the 2011 FISU Winter Universiade.

The planned site of the competitions, Erzurum (at 1850m), is the biggest city in the Eastern Anatolian region and is also a very ancient settlement. Located at the skirts of Palandöken Mountain, the city has gained great importance in the field of winter tourism in recent years.

Just 150 km from the border with Georgia to the north east, 200 km to Armenia to the east, 250km from the boarders of Iran and Iraq to the south and 300km to Syria to the south west, Erzurum is uniquely positioned in the world of skiing. The ski areas around Erzurum now annually host international ski tourists from Iran, Russia, Israel and the Netherlands. The ski areas are open from December until April.

The Turkish Ski Federation owns the ski lifts, snow making facilities and grooming machines for pretty much all of the ski areas in Turkey. Their goal is provide one season pass available at all ten ski areas in Turkey. There will be seven new high speed lifts installed and snowmaking installations with significant reservoir capacity.

The staging of the FISU Winter Universiade, set in late January 2011, has led to a great deal of new development in ski lifts, 14 km of a new snowmaking system, a new ski jumping facility, snowboard and ski half-pipe – the first in Turkey – as well as a brand new ski area for the Alpine competitions.

The Snowboard and Freestyle events will be held at Palandöken Mountain (2000m to 3150m) just minutes from the center of Erzurum. The brand new ski area is called Konakli, some 20 minutes from Erzurum, and it will host the alpine competitions in four events. The new 125m and 95m ski jumps are located at Kiremitliktepe while the area of Kandilli will host Cross-Country and Biathlon competitions. It has been estimated that over 30 million Euros will be spent on the development of new winter sports infrastructure including 10 new grooming machines.

Ski Cross

  • The Ski Cross slope and track was reviewed in the Vadi Lift area, near lift C4.

Moguls

  • The Mogul Slope was just above the end of the new B Lift and above the Gondola mid station.

[edit] Mogul Inspection

We reviewed the slopes above to mid Gondola station in search for a good mogul location. This slope is north facing. There is a main access road which runs along the middle of the ridge to the top of a ski left. There is broad slope which is quite steep 27 - 30 degrees which is some 200 meters wide and the length of the slope to the top of the ridge is some 250 meter to 300 meter long. A snow making line appears on one the maps and this maybe near the slope.

The ridge on the upper left of the photo is some 260 meters from this spot on the road.  There is water course that moves down from the top of the photo and this slope is between 26 - 27 degree. The slope could be over 250 meters long.  On the bottom left of the photo is the upper ridge of the road.  This is looking south.

[edit] Ski Cross Information

The site was reviewed on the map before it walked down. GPS data was recorded on a Nokia N96 using Sportstracker software [4]. The data file was then uploaded onto www.gpsies.com and a file was made of the course there. See this information at the link on GPSIES at [5].

At to top of the slope you can the Gondola Building and also the top of a chairlift station.  The proposed track started, 20 meters from the top of that lift. There is undulated terrain on the skiers right] and part of this can be used to create jumps and natural rollers.  This photo was taken just below a finish hut for alpine racing.

The Halfpipe was under construction. The main part of the pipe is defined and has been constructed. The proposed length of the pipe is 160m at 18 degree with 6.00 meter walls.  Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding share the same course standards.
