* There was no spectator stand in Ruka, but the site was in a natural bowl, so the slope behind the courses created a natural viewing stage and platform.
5.1 Analysis
Sauze D’Olux had the ‘better feeling’ of all three of the venues. Everyone felt very close to the action, and this brought a special atmosphere for the athletes and the spectators.
The standing spectators faired much better in Deer Valley, than Sauze D’Oulx. If the position of the Spectator Stand was at right angles to the Moguls course, this would have allowed more spectators.
In Deer Valley, the stand was quite far away from the action and some of the space was not used very well. The stadium was also used for the Olympic Slalom, which entered between the mogul and aerial courses.
5.2 Implications / Design Features
- There needs to be an angle between the mogul courses – like a ‘V’. If not, then the aerial landing hill (skiers left side) will block the view of the lower part of the mogul course.
- For Cypress, the center line of the mogul course is in a good position, but the aerial site needs to be moved off at an angle to the mogul course by maybe 20 to 30 degrees. (more distance between the courses at the top of the AE inrun)
- I would look at adding some more space (5 meters) between the center lines of each course. The skiers left side of the aerial hill and right side of the mogul course is perhaps unusable space and a machine cannot move around in here.
- From the weather proofing aspect, the cross winds coming on to the landing hill need to be avoided, therefore the landing hill needs to be pushed back into the slope to create more coverage for the landing hill and table. (see more detailed remarks in the aerial section and weather proofing)
- Regarding the position of the spectator stand, this should be used to also block the wind, so it should come around to the side (towards the hill) to block the wind.
6.0 WEATHER PROOFING
Some real considerations need to be taken in regard to the wind and the position and location of the aerial site.
6.1 Trees as wind blocks
Setting of the aerial site close to the trees. These trees will as act as a wind block.
Please keep as a many trees as possible and as close to the skiers right side of the aerial course. This will also add in great visibility of for the site in case of snow and fog.
6.2 Moving The R2 Back Into The Slope
Moving the R2 (landing hill to finish area) back into the hill some meters would also create more of a natural wind block.
6.3 Spectator Stands as Wind Blocks
The Spectator Stand, as least for the Games time, should be used as a wind block to the aerial landing hill and the finish area.
7.0 AERIAL SITE REMARKS
Specification | Revision 4 | Revision 5 | FIS Requirements |
Inrun Length: | 85m (@ 26º) | 89m @ 24.5º | Table up-1st 30m @ 25º, rest @ 26º |
Inrun Width | 26m | 26m | 26m |
Landing Hill: | 30m @ 37º | 30m @ 37º | 30m @ 38º |
Table Length: | 25m | 25m | 25m @ 0º |
Finish Area: | 30 m | 30m | 30m |
7.1 Inrun
The inrun above the R1 (inrun to table) needs to be 25º for 30 meters, then it can be 26º for the next 50 meters.
7.2 Landing Hill
Make the landing hill 38º degrees verses the 37º degrees shown now in the revision # 5.
7.3 Center Line / Landing as visual block
The Center Line of the Aerial Course needs to be shifted some 20º to 30º from it present position at 90º / square to the parking lot or as it is shown now on revision 5, more of less parallel to the mogul center line.
If this not done, then the landing hill will block the view of the mogul course from the ‘lookers left’ of the spectator stand.
7.4 R1 Inrun to Table
Eventually this area needs to be filled in to make the transition smoother than having just a 25 degree angle.
This should be done after the initial major work is finished. We can then find the best fit and make this final modification and improvement on the course.
8.0 MOGUL SITE REMARKS
Specification | Revision 4 | Revision 5 | FIS Requirements |
Length: | 252m | 252m | 252m |
Average Grade | 26.5º | 26.5º | 27.5º to 28.5º |
Course Width: | 23m | 23m | 23m |
Venue Width: | 37m | 37m | 37m |
Top Section | 98m @ 28.7º | 98m @ 28.7º | 98m @ 28.7º |
Bottom Section | 152m @ 25º | 152m @ 25º | 152m @ 27º |
Finish Area: | 30m | 30m | 30m @ 0º |
8.1 Angle Of Course
In your bid book, page 5 ‘Freestyle Skiing Technical Plans’, you indicate, ‘a 27º slope’ for the mogul course. The slope needs to be challenging and slopes below 27º, do not offer a significant challenge to the skiers skills.
8.2 Air Bumps
Regarding the placement of the air bumps, on a permanent basis, we should wait until we have used the hill once for a competition. After this, we can determine the best location on the hill.
They will be located from around 50m to 70m from the top and some 50m to 70m from the bottom.
8.3 Access to Both Sides at the start
On your plans Revision 4 & 5, you show only access to the start area from one side (skiers left). Access needs to be from both sides in order to make the site more functional. I see the so-called ‘Old Growth Forest’ on the skiers right, and perhaps this access can go above and behind the start and turn down hill to come to the start.
9.0 SPECTATOR STANDS
Where and how big the spectator stands will be, but we prefer to have them closer to the finish areas. They can also block the wind. It is stated that for moguls and aerials the venue capacity would be 12,000; 8,000 seated and 4,000 standing.

10 LIGHTING
Any lighting poles need to be beyond the field of play. The lighting poles cannot create a visual block between the spectators and the course.
You will need to light the full skiing access / ingress and exit / egress from the freestyle stadium to and from the ski lifts. Therefore, lighting will be needed on those ski runs and the lift towers according to industries standards for skiing.
The Sauze D’Olux Freestyle competitions were the first ever HD (High Definition) TV Production of a Winter Olympic outdoor event. I would expect this will continue to be the norm in 2010.
The requirements for illumination of the field of play are significant and higher than for a normal TV broadcast.
In a final analysis on Sauze D’Oulx, there was too much light production capacity and at times 30% to 40% of the lights were turned off.
11. TV POSITIONS
There are anywhere from 20 to 25 TV positions on each freestyle site.
Usually, this has to deal with the position of the sun, but since the finals of these competitions will occur at night, this might not be a factor.
Given the design, we would prefer that the TV positions be outer side of both courses. This would prevent the TV instillations creating a visual block of the course, like the tower for the mogul cable cam did in Sauze D’Oulx.

12. SKI LIFT
The faster the lift the better, the newer the lift, the better. If they are just using your money to replace another lift and use an old lift to access the freestyle site, I would then prefer a simple surface lift which just accesses the top of the mogul course.
13 SNOW MAKING
Any ski run that services the top or bottom of the mogul course will need to have snowmaking installed on that run.
14 JUDGES STAND
We would need to see the designs for these two permanent stands once they have been developed.
For Aerials, the stand needs to be on the skiers right, as you have shown in your plans.
Presently the aerial stand is parallel to the center line of the Aerial hill. We have found that if the aerial stand is offset by a few degrees (5º), towards the landing hill, this will improve the line of site and vision of the judges.
In Sauze D’Oulx, we had a significant amount of TV cameras and lights affixed to the aerial judges’ stand. In Deer Valley, the TV was on the opposite side of the aerial site.
This judges stand also needs to be used as a place where the athletes can get out of the weather.
15 VIDEO WALL / SCORE BOARD
The Video and Score Board location needs to be closer to the skiers right side of the mogul course.
Further to this note above, I would wait until the site is more or less finished before you determine the location of and the angle of the score board and video wall.
